'Never let the foul language of the people reduce your tongue to utter the same words back to them.

Once while the Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) was sitting with some of his companions, a man reviled Abu Bakr (radyAllahu ‘anhu) and insulted him, but Abu Bakr remained silent. He insulted Abu Bakr twice, but Abu Bakr controlled himself and remained silent. He insulted him for a third time, and Abu Bakr then let his tongue loose and responded back. At that, the Messenger of Allah got up and left.

Abu Bakr stood up and rushed out to meet him. He asked the Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam), "When the man spoke against me you did not leave, but when I replied you stood and left, as if you were angry?"

The Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) explained: "[When you were silent] an angel was defending you on your behalf, but when you [spoke and] took revenge, a devil appeared [instead], and I was not going to sit in the presence of a devil." ~ (Sunan Abu Dawud and Musnad Ahmad)

As a Muslim, always try to hold yourself to high morals, and do not let the ill words of people taint your character. This does not mean you turn the other cheek every time, but it does mean that you develop a thick skin and be patient against those who stoop low when criticizing you.

Most importantly, always have faith that Allah will defend the honor of those who are sincere to Him.'
