“The best of the prayer lines for men are the first rows, the worst being the final rows. The best of the prayer lines for women are the final rows and the worst are the first rows.” (Muslim)
At the time of the prophet peace be upon him, there were no physical barriers in the masajids, and the women were praying directly behind the men, so in order to deter the people from having the bad intentions of being closer to the opposite gender during the salah instead of focusing on the salah, the Messenger (peace be upon him) said this.
