In 1454 Yitzhak Sarfati, a Jewish rabbi living in the Ottoman Empire, sent a letter to Jews throughout Europe encouraging them to immigrate to Ottoman lands, where they could enjoy freedom of religion. He said that “here every man dwells at peace under his own vine and fig tree.”
