Umar ibn Al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever performs ablution perfectly and then he says: I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone without any partners, and I bear witness Muhammad is his servant and his messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves. If he says this, then the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through whichever he wishes.”

When Crusaders conquered Jerusalem in 1099, they massacred its entire population of 70,000 Muslims and Jews.

When Salah al-Din liberated the city 88 years later, he allowed its population to leave peacefully.

" Not only leave. He "escorted" the entire population through safe passage up till Christian lands."

" He also gave the jews and christians seperate quarters in the city to live in peace and prosperity."

" In the year 637 the armies of Islam lead by the Caliph Omar conquered the city of Jerusalem, the center of the Christian world and a magnet for Christian pilgrims. The city's Muslim masters exhibited a certain level of religious tolerance. No new churches were to be built and crosses could not be publicly displayed outside church buildings, but the pilgrims were allowed to continue their treks to the holiest shrines of Christendom (the pilgrims were charged a toll for access). The situation remained stable for over 400 years. Then, in the latter part of the 11th century, the Turks swarmed westward out of Central Asia overrunning all that lay in their path. Jerusalem fell to them in 1076. The atmosphere of tolerance practiced by the followers of Omar was replaced by vicious attacks on the Christian pilgrims and on their sacred shrines in the Holy City. Reports of robberies, beatings, killings, degradation of holy sites and the kidnapping for ransom of the city's patriarch made their way back to Europe. To the Europeans the Holy Land was now in the smothering grip of the Infidel and something must be done.

In response, Pope Urban II called a conference at the city of Clermont, France in 1095, concluding the eight days of deliberation with one of history's most influential speeches. Mounting a lofty scaffold, the Pope exhorted the assembled multitude to wrest the Holy Land from the hands of the Infidel and assured them that God would absolve them from any sin associated with the venture. His words fell on receptive ears as the crowd responded with cries of "It is the will of God!", "It is the will of God!". The Crusades had begun.

The First Crusade was the most successful in that it actually accomplished what it set out to do - conquer Jerusalem. But it had its problems. Responding to the Pope's challenge, thousands of peasants rallied to the cause motivated by a combination of religious fervor and the desire to escape their squalid condition at home. Led by Peter the Hermit and Walter the Penniless the hapless rabble marched across Europe to Constantinople, only to be slaughtered by the Turks soon after crossing the Bosphorus into Asia Minor.

In the meantime, the nobility of Europe raised an army of thousands that made its way through various routes and with much mishap to Constantinople. Unfortunately, many of these crusaders could not wait until they met the Muslims on the field of battle to demonstrate their religious zeal. As they progressed through Europe many Jewish communities became the target of their wrath and thousands were massacred.

In the spring of 1097, a host of over 100,000 crusaders joined forces on the eastern side of the Bosphorus. The combined army then fought its way along the coast of the Mediterranean reaching the gates of Jerusalem in June of 1099."

Tonight is the beginning of Ramadan.

The fact that Allah has blessed you to witness another Ramadan is proof that Allah wants to see you in His VIP list to enter Jannah.

Be sure to make the most of this Ramadan and prove to Allah that you are worthy of the rewards of this honor that He has blessed you with.

The great companion Talha bin ‘Ubaidullah (radyAllahu ‘anhu) narrated that two men came to the Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) and became Muslim together. After accepting Islam one of them would strive harder than the other. The one who used to strive harder went out to fight in the way of Allah and was martyred. The other man who accepted Islam at the same time as the martyr lived a year longer, then he also passed away.

Later Talha reported that he saw in a dream that he was at the gate of Paradise and he saw those two men that had died. Then through the gates of Paradise someone came out and admitted the one who had died last into Jannah, then he came out again and admitted the one who died first as a martyr. Then he came back to Talha and said: ‘Go back, for your time has not yet come.’”

The next morning, Talha told the people of the dream and they were amazed. News of that reached the Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) and they told him the story.

The Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Why are you so amazed at that?”

They said: “O Messenger of Allah, the first one was the one who strove harder, and he died a martyr in the cause of Allah, but the other man (who didn't strive as hard and was not a martyr) was admitted to Paradise before him?"

The Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Did he (the second man) not live for another year?” They said: “Yes.”

The Prophet (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) asked: “And did not Ramadan come and he fasted, and he offered such and such prayers during that year?” They said: “Yes.”

The Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The difference between them is greater than the difference between the heaven and the earth.” ~ [Collected by Ibn Majah]

Ramadan Kareem to you all!

"The view that Islam is an inflexible religion is beyond my comprehension. To the extent that I can understand its laws, [Islam] can live together with non-Muslims in the same country; it can be at peace with them; it can enter into treaties with them, as well as in commercial transactions, partnership, tenancy, the exchange of gifts, loans, trusts, etc...There are countless laws and principles governing social order in Islam that reveal its consideration for and tolerance of others that are not found in other religions...This is the meaning of [Islam's] flexibility. But this flexibility does not imply weakness, nor a willingness to make false and forbidden acts manners of acceptable practice."

Yasir Qadhi wrote on his Facebook page

" Yesterday, a brother from Xinjiang, China, who is working in my city came up to me with a question. He told me that his relatives back home were asking: would their fast count if they were forced to eat and drink by the government during the day?

I asked him how the government does this. He replied that there is a public luncheon (for example his relative is a schoolteacher) and the Muslims are monitored to see if they eat or drink. So there are people whose job it is to check whether Muslims are eating or not.

I said, 'Is there any way for them to pretend to eat but not actually eat?' He replied, 'Not really, since the government monitors are checking to see if they are actually eating.'

I asked what were the consequences if they refused. He said that best case scenario is that they would eventually lose their jobs, and worst case scenario, jail and imprisonment and fines.

He told me that he had called his mother a few days ago to wish her Ramadan Mubarak, to which his mother, a very elderly lady, became agitated, changed the topic, and hinted at him not to even mention the word 'Ramadan' over the phone for fear of repercussion and harassment.

I told him that in such a case, a Muslim who is forced to eat and drink by a tyrant will NOT have his fast broken, and that he should continue the fast for the rest of the day and break it at its proper time, since Allah forgives that which someone has been forced to do. And losing one's livelihood, or threat of torture, is a legitimate excuse in the Shariah to make the impermissible (in this case, breaking the fast) permissible.

The brother thanked me profusely and left. But I felt such an intense feeling of emptiness. I just sat there in a whirlwind of emotions. Thankfulness that I am able to fast without such pressure. Anger at such tyrants for forcing people to break their fast. Sympathy with those Muslims that have to live under such harsh conditions. Bewilderment at how any human could be so full of hatred towards another religion that he would want to force others to break their fasts. Anxiety at the state of the Ummah: Gaza, Syria, Myanmar, Xinjiang...and the list goes on.

O Allah! To you we complain of our weakness and inability to protect those in need of protection! Forgive us for our own shortcomings and sins, and accept whatever meager good we have done."

Malik ibn Sa’sa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, narrated to them about his night journey, saying, “We ascended until we reached the second heaven where Gabriel asked for the gate to be opened, but it was said: Who is it? Gabriel said: I am Gabriel. It was said: Who is with you? Gabriel said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been called? Gabriel said yes. When we reached beyond the second heaven, I saw John and Jesus who are cousins. Gabriel said: These are John and Jesus, so greet them with peace. I greeted them with peace and they returned my greeting, saying: Welcome, O righteous brother and prophet.”

Aws ibn Aws reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the best of your days is Friday. Adam was created on it, and on it he died, and on it the trumpet will be blown and the shout will be made, so send blessings upon me for your blessings are presented to me.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will our supplications reach you once you have decayed?” The Prophet said, “Verily, Allah the Exalted has forbidden the bodies of the prophets from decaying.”

Verily, the reckoning will only be grueling on the Day of Resurrection for people who did not hold themselves accountable.”

"O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs."

Yusuf Ali transliteration

"O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not "Trinity" : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs."

What does 'preserve them' mean?
As-Salaamu Alaykum, it means to memorize them and also to act upon them, so for example knowing Allah is the Most Just means we should not oppress anyone. Allah knows best
