"The view that Islam is an inflexible religion is beyond my comprehension. To the extent that I can understand its laws, [Islam] can live together with non-Muslims in the same country; it can be at peace with them; it can enter into treaties with them, as well as in commercial transactions, partnership, tenancy, the exchange of gifts, loans, trusts, etc...There are countless laws and principles governing social order in Islam that reveal its consideration for and tolerance of others that are not found in other religions...This is the meaning of [Islam's] flexibility. But this flexibility does not imply weakness, nor a willingness to make false and forbidden acts manners of acceptable practice."
- Husayn Ahmad Madani (d. 1957)
